Participation in Nigeria
Major Cleavages
Nigeria is home to 250 separate ethnic groups which make nationalism a Nigerian difficulty. The country is separated religiously with the North being Muslim and the South being Christian, which is also a conflict. Besides the obvious urban/rural split typical of most developing countries, there is also a large gap between the rich and the poor, with the rich having gained their wealth through corruption. This continues to contribute to class conflicts. Participation of People and Choosing of Elites Nigerian citizens have the ability to vote in elections, and the transparency and legitimacy of these election have increased since 2011. The people vote for officials on the state and national level, with the President being elected by popular vote. The President's cabinet is chosen by him/her but must be approved by the legislature. Role of the Media Nigeria's media is well developed and independent. It does well in reflecting ethnic diversity within the country. The media is generally more outspoken in the South.
