The Senate
The Nigerian Senate has 109 senators, three from each of the 36 states, and one from the capital of the Nigeria. They are directly elected by popular vote. The senate has the power of impeachment for judges and high power officials. They also have the power of confirming president appointed officials. 4 of the 109 senators are women The House of Representatives The Nigerian House of Representatives has 360 members. The House is elected through single member districts by plurality vote. Before a law may become a law, the bill must be passed through the House for review. 13 Representatives are women Both Houses are elected by regional representation, where a wide variety of candidates may represent the country. They come from all over the country, leading to ethnic and religious diversity. The National Assembly Nigeria's old parliamentary system was in place until 1979, where reform came to put in place a Presidential System with a bicameral legislature. This is known as the National Assembly, where the Nigerian Government has the House of Representatives and The Senate. This is to equally represent the whole country, in terms of Regions. |
