Since the founding of the United States and dating back to the Puritanical roots of the nation, religion has been a major cleavage in American politics. Religion has influenced many issues such as people positions against abortion. Religion has also impacted peoples views on other social issues such as same-sax marriage, an issue that has recently risen to the forefront of American politics. Additionally religion has played a role in the formation of the Tea Party which has its base with evangelical Christians.
Another major cleavage in the United States is race. Race an ethnic back ground have impacted issues from economics to immigration. Many people such as Hispanic Americans, because of their ethnic background support measures such as a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants. Race also has played role in the History of American politics in which racial communities such as African-American were discriminated against and made their voices heard by protests such as those lead by Martin Luther King Jr.
